International student finance
For African students aspiring to study in the UK, understanding the available financial options is crucial. Navigating the financial landscape can be complex, with tuition fees, living costs, and various funding options to consider. This article covers key aspects of international student finance, specifically tailored for African students. From scholarships to student loans for international students, we provide an overview to help you make informed decisions about funding your education in the UK.
Tuition Fees and Living Costs in UK
Tuition Fees
- Undergraduate: International undergraduate tuition fees range from £11,400 to £38,000 annually.
- Postgraduate: International postgraduate tuition fees range from £9,000 to £30,000 annually. Numerous postgraduate programs in the UK can be finished within one year of full-time study
Living Costs
As an international student without dependants, you should budget approximately £1,300 to £1,400 per month if you are living in London, or between £900 and £1,300 per month if you are living elsewhere in the UK. These estimates include accommodation, bills, groceries, and other living expenses during your studies.
All figures are current as of July 2024, according to the British Council.
Student Loans for International Students
International students do not qualify for the UK’s domestic student finance options, such as government-funded student loans and grants. These financial aids are reserved for UK residents and citizens, which include those with indefinite leave to remain, British citizenship, or those with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
However, there are alternative options for financing your education:
Private Student Loans
Some banks and financial institutions offer private student loans specifically designed for international students. These loans typically have the following characteristics:
- Higher interest rates compared to government-funded loans
- May require a UK-based guarantor or co-signer
- Often have stricter eligibility criteria
- Loan amounts may be based on the cost of tuition and living expenses
Home Country Loans
Some students may be eligible for loans from their home country that can be used for international study. These options vary widely depending on the country of origin.
University-Specific Loans
Some UK universities offer their own loan programs for international students. These are often limited in number and may have specific eligibility requirements.
Considerations for International Student Loans
When exploring loan options, keep in mind:
- Interest rates and repayment terms
- Eligibility requirements
- Loan disbursement process
- Currency exchange rates and potential fluctuations
- Repayment obligations after graduation
It’s important to thoroughly research and compare different loan options before making a decision. Additionally, consider exploring scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial aid that don’t require repayment as primary options.

Visa Requirements
To obtain a student visa, African students must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses for up to one academic year (9 months). The required amount for living expenses is £1,334 per month for courses in London or £1,023 per month for courses outside London. This money must be held in an acceptable financial institution for at least 28 consecutive days before applying for the visa, and the evidence must be dated within 31 days of the visa application.
As of 21/08/2024, the cost of a UK student visa is £363 if applying from outside the UK and £490 if applying from within the UK. Additionally, the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is £776 per year for students. The IHS gives students access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).
Work Opportunities
African students are typically allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays. This can help offset some living expenses but shouldn’t be relied upon as a primary source of funding.
By thoroughly researching and planning their finances, African students can make their dream of studying in the UK a reality. While the costs can be significant, the variety of funding options available can help make UK higher education more accessible to talented African students.
